Inspired by the work of Japanese American poet and activist Janice Mirikitani, “Out of the Dust” brings the ghosts in her words to life through dance. Filmed at the former internment camps at Manzanar National Historic Site, the work captures the impact of wartime Japanese American incarceration to show the indelible connections between family histories and social history. Shared memories passed through objects and settings create bonds of intergenerational inheritance that emerge from buried histories to resonate today.
