A man’s life is forever changed by incarceration in “Every Second,” a sweeping film that shapes a powerful metaphor for personal and historical pasts that are very much present. With its protagonist as a central touchpoint, the film traverses space and time to convey the common experiences of Black men and the many meanings of freedom passed through generations. Between open landscapes and confined spaces, his inner turmoil becomes outward expression through vivid gestures of subjugation, struggle, resilience, and liberation. As he faces the enduring impacts of incarceration, he chooses to be present in his own life and use his experiences to fuel a desire for change.
